Coral Reefs: Discovering Climate Resilience and Hope (2026)

Coral reefs, often written off as ecosystems beyond saving, are proving more resilient than expected, according to new research presented at the Our Ocean Conference in Mombasa, Kenya. This study, currently under peer review, identifies nearly 166,000 square kilometers of reefs globally that are potentially climate-resilient, capable of withstanding the intense heat of climate change. The research, conducted by Emily Darling and her team with the Wildlife Conservation Society and SkyTruth, focuses on five countries' coastal waters: Bahamas, Cuba, Australia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Darling emphasizes that these resilient reefs are not evenly distributed, and their identification can guide conservation efforts. By pinpointing specific areas, communities dependent on reefs for sustenance and economic stability can better protect these vital ecosystems. The study builds on previous research, which identified 50 reefs with the best chance of survival if properly protected.

The research also highlights the importance of understanding the factors driving resilience. Some reefs benefit from natural processes like upwelling of cold water, while others, like those off the coast of Kenya, face constant heat exposure. However, even in these challenging environments, some corals exhibit remarkable resistance to heat, allowing the entire reef to survive bleaching events.

Stacy Jupiter, executive director of the Global Marine Program at WCS, observed this resilience in Fiji after Cyclone Winston in 2016. Baby corals, all of similar size, were found four years later, indicating the reef's ability to recover. This recovery is crucial, as coral bleaching, caused by warming oceans, poses significant threats to marine life and human livelihoods.

Despite the promising findings, challenges remain. Climate change, driven by fossil fuel combustion, accelerates ocean heat and bleaching events. Coral diseases, independent of climate stress, are also causing significant damage in the Caribbean. The frequent bleaching events, coupled with shrinking recovery windows, raise concerns about the long-term survival of even the most resilient corals.

Darling stresses the importance of protecting corals with diverse resilience within a reef, akin to a financial portfolio. This approach ensures that if one form of strength fails, others can compensate, reducing overall risk. The research aims to maximize the impact of conservation funding, focusing on areas with the highest potential for resilience, such as establishing marine protected areas and active coral restoration efforts.
